How the scholarship works

Founded in 1991 through the generosity of Doug and Eva Dewar, the Lake Chelan Valley Scholarship Fund supports local students in pursuing higher education and vocational training. Through renewable scholarships for students at all stages—from graduating seniors to returning adult learners—LCVSF continues to strengthen the future of the Lake Chelan Valley through education and opportunity.

Scholarship overview

All scholarships are funded through interest and dividends generated by the endowment—ensuring long-term sustainability. Since 1991, the Lake Chelan Valley Scholarship Fund has awarded over $900,000 to local students. Awards are renewable for up to four years and can be used for tuition, books, and other direct educational expenses.

Who can apply

LCVSF accepts applications from Lake Chelan Valley residents pursuing undergraduate education or vocational training. Eligible applicants include graduating high school seniors, current college students, and adults returning to school.

How scholarships are awarded

Scholarships are awarded based on financial need, academic performance, goals, and commitment to a chosen field of study, with the greatest emphasis placed on financial need.

The Dewar legacy: from service to scholarship

A life of community service

Doug and Eva Dewar were both born in Canada and shared a life defined by resilience and community spirit. After sustaining a severe leg wound during World War I, Doug pursued his dental education in Portland, Oregon. In 1925, the couple moved to Chelan to establish a dental practice—a move that coincided with the historic construction of the Chelan Dam and Power Station.

A heart for the youth

Though the Dewars had no children of their own, they were deeply committed to the well-being and future of the youth in the Lake Chelan Valley. Doug, an avid outdoorsman, passed away in 1977,followed by Eva in 1987. Their shared vision was clear: their estate was to be dedicated to the benefit of local children.

The growth of the LCVSF

In 1991, their wish became a reality with the establishment of the Lake Chelan Valley Scholarship Fund (LCVSF). In its inaugural year, the fund awarded five $1,000 scholarships. Since then, the fund has grown substantially through the generosity of the community.
